We realised that this digital overload is on a rise and so we got in touch with Mr. Ramachandran P, Group COO, Essilor India to share his words of advice for the modern gadget addicts. Here are some of the important questions he answered.

An average person spends 7-8 hours daily usually switching between a phone screen and a laptop. Some might even have a tablet or a TV screen in addition to the above. They are being exposed to multiple light intensity, font sizes at different distances.

Doctors say increasing exposure to digital screens is leading to rising number of people reporting tired and weary eyes, headaches, blurred vision, itching and burning. The concern is particularly high in youngsters because they are the ones who are more active users of digital devices. Computer Vision Syndrome, which was considered an appropriate condition to describe the increasing stress on eyes and posture till recently, looks an obsolete term today given the rapid transition in technology that have added several new facets to visual eyestrain.

 

What steps should be taken for kids to avoid the harmful effects of digital overload?

Kids should ensure their digital devices are to be held at 1 arm distance at all times.  It is also advisable to follow the 20-20-20 rule. Which implies that every 20min you look 20 feet away for 20 sec.

With increasing presence of multiple devices. This doesn’t just increase digital exposure of the eye, but adds extra pressure on the eyes as they continuously switch between devices and adapt their focus while sitting, standing and lying down. Kids may by playing playstation, at the same time checking on their smartphones  as well they spend immense time on laptops for academic purpose.
