While we all can hold films responsible for setting unrealistic expectations about life and love in our lives, we have to appreciate them for not ruining one relationship in our lives by superficialising it - friendship. We have to give it to the movie makers - both in Hollywood and Bollywood, for always maintaining the sincerity and integrity of this bond. And, when we say Bollywood has been setting some major #FriendshipGoals for us, we specifically mean the undertones of bromance that has been the plotline to some of the biggest hits in the history of Hindi cinema.
Long before we saw Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol creating a ruckus in Spain in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, we had our beloved three musketeers - Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Khanna, who single-handedly took Goa tourism by storm, setting friendship stands high for us all. Dil Chahta Hai wasn’t just a coming of age film for millennials, rather the movie spoke about the bond between friends like never before. Through thick and thin, despite their differences, Sameer, Sid and Akash were always there for each other and if that isn’t bromance, then what is?
But if you thought that bromance entered Bollywood with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara or Dil Chahta Hai, then you couldn’t be more wrong. Long before these movies, the Hindi film industry has established that bromance is always greater than romance, case in point - Sholay. This cult Hindi movie is remembered more for Jai and Veeru’s friendship than Veeru’s chemistry with Basanti. Also, if you haven’t wept along with Amitabh Bachchan for Rajesh Khanna in Anand, then you haven’t felt the true essence of friendship.
3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti, Munna Bhai, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Rock On!, Kai Po Che!, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety - the list is endless, with each movie, the Hindi film fraternity has set a benchmark higher for bromance for all of us and we just love this dose of camaraderie and love between friends; after all, it’s way better than then clichéd, unrealistic romances that they have made us watch through the years.
P.S. - There are many films highlighting the female bond of friendship as well, but that’s a story for another day - we’d surely take you through that memory lane very soon...
