Back to Future Trilogy

They Literally Predicted Everything

In time travelling duo, Marty McFly ( Michael J. Fox ) and Dr. Emmett Brown’s ( Christopher Lloyd ) classic, Back to the Future 2 , which hit theatres back in ‘89, they travelled to 21st Oct, 2015 to transform their future. It depicts how the future would look like 26 years later. We placed the two worlds, one that was predicted and the other of reality, next to each other and compared them to test the capacity of the human imagination.

1. VIDEO CONFERENCE

At a time when the world connected over landlines and basic cellular phones, which too were products of luxury, the movie predicted that in 2015 video conferencing would be an easily available option. With the growing popularity of face-time, Skype, Viber and all other mega apps reaching out to take their services for video conferencing, this comes across as freakishly true.

RELEVANCE: Ahead of time.

2. HOVER-BOARDS

It’s official that the gravity defying hover-board has become a reality and multiple brands have come out with their versions of working prototypes, while some others have even launched their products. If you have been living under a rock you need to check out the Lexus hover-board.

RELEVANCE: Almost there.

3. FLYING DRONES

Who would’ve thought that an unmanned tiny object that can fly and do multiple tasks would come into existence one day? The drone taking out the dog for a walk in the movie is a reality now. They’re being used everywhere today, right from shooting videos to delivering food at your doorstep.

RELEVANCE: Bang on.

4. BETTER WEATHER FORECASTING

W4. Back in the day weather forecasting was an evil joke, and the film predicts that 26 years later it will all turn around. And thankfully, it’s become near perfect with accurate minuteby-minute predictions about the atmospheric conditions available to us at the click of a few buttons.

RELEVANCE: Bang on.

5. GESTURE BASED COMPUTING

Geeks in the front row of the tech world had multiple orgasms when this became a reality. Research and execution allowed them to come up with gesture based games with haptic feedback, which are even being incorporated in high-end cars today. Back then it could only be reckoned with a fantastic imagination that you could start music by merely pointing your left finger at the console, or you could play tennis with a wireless remote controller in your hand!

RELEVANCE: Bang on.

6. BIO-METRIC SCANNERS

Years back it was predicted that there would be a day when we wouldn’t have to carry any other identification but own body for confirming our individual identity. And bam! This became a reality years before 2015 and changed security systems across the world. Today we use them just about everywhere, either at our workplace, public places like airports or even on our iPhones.

RELEVANCE: Bang on.

7. INTELLIGENT CLOTHING

Marty’s powerlacing shoes are all set to become a reality. Nike is coming up with self tying shoes and the launch date coincides with the date on which Marty and the Doc landed in the future, 21st Oct 2015. This may be a marketing gimmick but technology has definitely taken the appropriate jump.
