The PropheC of Punjabi Pop
He is a singer, songwriter, music producer and one of Saavn’s Artist Originals. With hits like Vibe, Drama and Feelin, The PropheC has gained a massive fan following in the country. We chatted with him about his latest single, his association with Saavn and what inspires his sound and music. Excerpts from the interview:
What was the idea behind your new track, ‘Hit Me Up’?
Hit Me Up is a very personal song. The idea was to make a song that highlighted the side effects of success. I feel a lot of artists are focussed on making commercial songs but I wanted to share something personal, my experience of how I was feeling after the success of my previous songs.
When and why did you decide to pursue a career in music?
I have been learning music since I was a child and have been delving into different genres of music for most of my life. Personally, I think it was the only thing I was good at.
How would you describe your experience of working with Saavn?
It was a great experience working with Saavn for this release. I feel, with every release, it becomes more important to connect with my fans in India. Since the release of my first song, the Indian audience has been one of my greatest supporters. With Artist Originals, I was not only able to target my already existing fan base but also reach new listeners that had not heard my music before.
YouTube hits and musical chart rankings play a huge role in deciding the success of a song. Do you weigh your success in terms of these numbers?
I think views do matter but only to a certain extent. With people buying fake views and rigging their chart positions, I think there are many other factors which decide whether your song is successful or not. I think one of the main factors is touring regularly and getting the monetary return from a song. Making music is our job, and no matter how many views you get, if you are not making a profit out of it then you are not doing your job right.
Who are the artists that have inspired your sound and music?
I have always been a huge fan of A.R. Rahman and a whole array of other Bollywood composers. However, in my teen years, I was heavily influenced by Hip Hop producers such as Dr Dre and Timbaland. I think my sound is a mixture of all of these elements.
Name one artist you would like to collaborate with, in the future?
I would love to collaborate with anyone doing something new and inspiring me to push my creative boundaries.
What do you like to do, apart from making music?
I watch a lot of movies and TV. Every break I get from making music, I’m usually watching a movie.
Which is the one song that you like to hear at the end of a tiring day?
These days I am listening to Drake’s new album to keep inspiring myself for the next day.
What is next with Saavn’s Artist Originals?
We have a lot of new music planned with Saavn’s Artist Originals. While I can not say much right now, I can assure you that each project will be bigger than the last.
