It has been a long-running debate over who’s the best: dogs or cats. However, have you ever thought of other oh-so-adorable exotic animals that exist? Okay, that may be overkill, but we’re sure the world of exotic pets are yet to be explored by many. People with less popular pets such as ferrets or lizards are often called out for their radical ways. But trust us, it’s not as unusual as it seems. Would you own a pet dragon? (Game of Thrones fan, anyone?) Or a tarantula? Or a cockroach? Believe it or not, there are several people out there who call such eccentric animals their pets. Ignite your curiosity a tad bit more and find out the ever growing exotic pets bordering peculiar, and discover simplistic ways to not let them die.

THE BEARDED DRAGON

There’s a well-known category of conventional pet devotees, but have you ever thought of a community that loves dragons? Maybe not. So, if you want a friend that’s chilled out and doesn’t drink up all your beer, then bearded dragons are your best bet. They are one of the easiest going and relaxed reptiles in the world. You can train them on a leash, and they will carelessly allow you to dress them up in fancy attire.

The bearded dragon is usually friendly however, you will have to take care of their specific needs. The reptiles live in extremely tropical and dry climates and most of their hydration springs from the vegetables and plants they eat. So you can create a lounge-like atmosphere for it with a gigantic rock along with food, heat, lots of water, and it’ll be your best friend for 10 to12 years.

THE TARANTULA

Well, Hagrid is not the only deranged one to befriend a spider and make it a pet. A lot of people go crazy over a tarantulas’ soft and fuzzy body, only to realise later it’s not that cute looking after all. Everything aside, the tarantula is quite harmless, doesn’t consume much food, and apparently, you can also play with it. Moreover, its bite is not lethal, and it will only attack if coaxed. Just the fact that tarantulas come in several sizes and colours have made them quite attractive in the exotic pet market.

A pet tarantula does not recognise its owner and often views humans as a threat. So, the possibilities of a bite or hair flung toward your face are pretty high. Thus, you’ve to give them freedom and keep them in tall enclosures, at least double the height of the spider as they like to hang. The spiders are omnivores and if you feed them and love them from a distance, they can live up to 36 years.

 

THE HEDGEHOG

We’re assuming that so far the scoreboard says ‘Dogs - 2, Exotics Pets - 0.’ Will the hedgehog be the first exotic animal to score a point against dogs? Let’s find out. It is definitely an adorable animal that’s covered in spikes. Not that cute anymore, perhaps? Nonetheless, when you’re sleeping, you may find a peaking glance of this nocturnal animal spinning on its wheel peacefully. But if you get too affectionate and think of cuddling it at night, don’t. Remember, it has spikes.

Hedgehogs are gentle pets, and you can find specially formulated food for these thorny animals. Hedgehogs can run over six feet per second. So, feed them nutritional food and lots of water to keep them well hydrated and healthy.

 

THE MADAGASCAR HISSING COCKROACH

Let’s not be grossed out just yet. There are people in the world who are of the view that this creepy, hissing insect can actually be a loving pet. If you’re able to digest the concept of having a cockroach in your house, you might learn these hissers make surprisingly good pets. Plus, if you listen closely, their hissing sound can be music to your ears.
